Briarcliff Manor derives its name from a property purchased in the 1850s by an Episcopal minister named John David Ogilvy, who subsequently christened it "Brier Cliff" after the name of his family's home in Ireland. The property remains the site of the All Saints' Episcopal Church, which Ogilvy founded in 1854 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

The scenic parks and recreational grounds, including the Old Croton Aqueduct State Historic Park, a 26-mile trail that cuts through Briarcliff Manor and extends south to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx and north to the Croton Dam in Cortlandt, and the majestic Rockefeller State Park Reserve, a 1700-plus acre nature sanctuary lined with 45 miles of stone carriage roads that was once a country estate owned by the Rockefeller family.
Briarcliff Manor is a village located in the southern Hudson Valley of New York State in Westchester County, spanning both the Town of Ossining and Town of Mount Pleasant. The majority of the village is part of the Briarcliff Manor Union Free School District, while the very western and northwestern portions lie within the Ossining Union Free School District. Commuter rail access to New York City is available from Scarborough Station.
Briarcliff Manor's motto is "a village between two rivers", signifying its location between the Hudson River on its western border and the Pocantico River flowing through its eastern region. The motto also reflects the village's natural beauty, as well as its abundance of trails, parks, and other outdoor recreational activities. Besides all the greenery, residents appreciate the strong public schools, the intimate setting, and the close-knit community.
