Bronxville was named in the late 19th century for the Bronx River, which forms the village's western border, after William Van Dozer Lawrence, the founder of a successful pharmaceutical company, purchased land in the area to develop a planned community. The settlement was previously known as Underhill Crossing, named for a local bridge spanning the Bronx River that was built by the Underhill family, one of the first European settlers in the region.
