Millburn was given its name by 19th century Scottish-American residents for the several water-powered mills that were built along the "burn", which refers to a large stream in Scottish Gaelic, known as the Rahway River that cuts through the area. Short Hills derives its name from the indigenous inhabitants, the Lenape Native Americans, whose name for the area in their Munsee language translates to "short hills," reflecting the area's jagged topography.
