Princeton derives its name from "Princetown", which was the name given to the community in the early 18th century by a prominent landlord of an early estate built in the area. The indigenous inhabitants, the Lenape Native Americans, had built well-traveled paths through the area that later became prominent Princeton streets, including Nassau Street along which Princeton University now stands.

Princeton is a municipality located in central New Jersey within Mercer County. The municipality is co-terminus with the Princeton Public Schools district. Commuter rail access to New York City (and inter-city rail access to other major cities including Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington) is available from Princeton Junction Station in neighboring West Windsor (also a "Blue Jay Town"), which can be reached via the Princeton Dinky rail line from Princeton Station.
Princeton is replete with culture and historical charm, much of it stemming from the renowned, eponymous Ivy League university that has educated leading political and academic figures since prior to the founding of the United States. Being a college town, Princeton has a thriving, walkable downtown and town square enjoyed by students and residents alike. Beyond its strong association with one of the world's leading higher learning institutions, residents especially love the borough's excellent public schools, numerous parks and green spaces, and convenient transit access.
