The Ridgewood area was previously known as "Paramus," which means "land of the wild turkeys" in the Lenape language spoken by the region's indigenous inhabitants, the Lenape Native Americans (the neighboring borough of Paramus still bears this name). Residents successfully lobbied to change the village's name to Ridgewood in the mid-19th century after a rail line was built through the area and a station was constructed at Ridgewood Avenue.

Ridgewood is a village in northern New Jersey located within Bergen County. The village is co-terminus with the Ridgewood Public Schools district. Commuter rail access to New York City is available from Ridgewood Station.
Ridgewood is a lively village that combines upscale living with historical charm. While the western section of Ridgewood offers striking views of the New York City skyline, the village's eastern section is where many residents live and enjoy a multitude of restaurants, cafes, and other retail shops, as well as unique cultural attractions such as the Ridgewood Guild Film Festival. Nonetheless, the best-in-class public schools remain the top draw.
