Scarsdale means "a dale or valley of scars and rocks." The village's name derives from land purchased in the area in the early 18th century by Caleb Heathcote, a merchant who later served as the 31st Mayor of New York City, who named his new property the "Manor of Scarsdale" after his family's home in Sutton Scarsdale, a village in north-central England.

Scarsdale is a village and town located in the southern Hudson Valley of New York State within Westchester County. The village/town is co-terminus with the Scarsdale Public Schools district. Commuter rail access to New York City is available from Scarsdale Station.
Scarsdale is known for being a quintessential example of upscale American suburbia, and is widely seen as one of the region's wealthiest towns. In keeping with its historical roots, Scarsdale's street names, downtown architecture, and historical estates all convey a distinctly English countryside character. But what draws most residents to the scenic town are the excellent public schools, boutique retail establishments, and convenient transit accessibility to New York City.
