Westport was known as "Green's Farms" until the early 19th century in honor of John Green, one of the first five Englishmen (known collectively as the Bankside Farmers) who settled in the region in the mid-17th century. Green's Farms remains the name of the oldest neighborhood in Westport, where Green first owned land and called home. Earlier, the area was called "Machamux", which means "beautiful land" in the Pequot language spoken by the indigenous inhabitants, the Pequot Native Americans.
